Two Matamoras Pennsylvania Volunteer Fire Department former officers have each been charged with stealing over US$68,000 from bingo funds.  Former Fire Chief Kevin DeGroat, 49, and his wife, former Department Treasurer Theresa DeGroat, 46, who were highly regarded within the department, almost left it broke.

The scheme was described within court documents, where the couple would siphon cash from bingo fundraisers.  Theresa DeGroat did admit to opening the sealed money bags after the bingo games, and swapping the deposit slip out with a new one she had written which was deposited in the bank. Read more

Bingo, yoga, cooking classes, movie nights an learning how to dance are all activites you would expect to find onboard a cruise ship, right?  Well these activities are part of a new programme to be introduced in American detention centres for illegal immirants to try and make them more humane. 

The proposal wants detainees treated with more respect, and also includes having access to legal materials, emails and phones, as well as receive computer training, and be able to learn arts and crafts, play bingo and exercise.   Read more
